The fish have a moderately elongated body, compressed at the sides and ending in a triangular or rounded tail. The head is pointed with large eyes. The scales are contrasting and clearly visible. The size of dwarf cichlids ranges from 3 to 12 cm. Males are larger than females.

Geophagus - a genus of freshwater fish in the family Cichlidae, which includes many aquatic inhabitants of different shapes and colours. All members of the genus have a conical head with large round eyes. The strong, slender body is often covered with bright spots and stripes. The size of individuals in pet shops does not exceed 10-12 cm. Individuals in the Amazon biotope are 28-30 cm.

Mouth with elongated lips in the form of a suction cup, the edges of which are covered with keratinous plates that enable it to scrape algae from rocks, stumps and plants.

Nannostomus - 20 species of freshwater ray-finned fishes of the family Lebiasinae, characterised by a modest size of 3-5 cm, an elongated torpedo-shaped body and a small mouth. The fins are short and small. The tail is two-lobed. Most lack an adipose fin. The fish are caught in the vegetated tributaries of the Amazon and Rio Negro, where decaying branches and leaves on the bottom are a source of humic acids and tannins.
